Listening: Make A Quality Characteristic Of Communication

Listening can be explained as the ability of a message receiver. The process of decoding the message (interpreting the message) and understanding the meaning can be referred to as it. Without this, the communication mode will be meaningless.

Steps To Listen Effectively

The best way to improve this is to face the speaker and maintain eye contact. Do your conversation facing straight to your partner. Increase your mind presence, pay heed, and be ready always. Listen to everything keeping your mind always open. You shouldn’t be judgemental and criticizing while listing to others. The steps to listening are:

  1. Receiving the communication made by the sender.
  2. Decoding the communication/information.
  3. Understanding the information.
  4. Analyzing the information.
  5. Store the information.
  6. Reciprocating to the sender.

These six steps are very necessary to follow to master in this soft skill. The skill of it is very important in the corporate world also. So, if you fail to understand the requirement of your clients then you will lose the assignment.

Understanding Listening

It may be referred to as receiving sound through ear. But it means much more than that. It includes recognizing the sound and processing them into meaningful words & sentences. So, it requires the attention and focus of the receiver. It is a soft skill that needs to be brushed up regularly.

The different barriers to listening are external destruction. Physical destruction of things in your work environment day divert your attention away from the person with whom you are communicating.

Keep in mind, listening is winning. Tell yourself that you will tell someone else about this conversation later. Keep eye contact. Also, summarise what was said. Pause instead of trying to mind thread. Get some fresh air or exercise. When you listen just sit and listen.

Upgrade Your Ability

A person doing it without paying proper attention will fail to understand the message properly. Thus the goal of effective communication becomes a failure. It becomes easier if the message conveyed has some visual effects also. For example, you visited the stadium to watch a cricket match. The same match your friend listened to on the radio that day.

After someday when you and your friend will have a chat over that cricket match you will see that you remember more about the match than your friend. This is because you have a visual effect that your friend hasn’t. So, your listening was more effective than him.

The keys to a brief care conversation or being a good listener to understanding and accurateness involves 5 stages: receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering and responding.

An active person who has the ability to listen goes through all the 5 stages and has to receive the communication first, then the stage understanding, evaluating & remembering takes place into our brain. Then he can reply or respond suitably.  

Being a good listener is helpful in life because that way you will know more about everything else than others do. So work on improving your listening skills and see the major changes.
